A suburb of Birkenhead and located on the Wirral Peninsula, Tranmere hosts and impressive 16,000 residents. Hugging the River Mersey, Tranmere lies 7km south-east from the Irish Sea at New Brighton. Tranmere had a historic Ferry service operating form as early as 1817 and was extremely popular and convenient. The crossing was closed in 1904 and became part of the Cammell Laird Docks. Tranmere also was home to the largest and most expensive World War II air raid shelters.
